David Cook is the founder and owner of Barn Door Hostel, located in Rumney, New Hampshire, a renowned destination for rock climbers in the Northeast. Born and raised in Connecticut, David's journey toward establishing the hostel began after his graduation in 2012. He spent that summer working as a manager, group leader, climbing instructor, and environmental educator at a summer camp, which sparked his curiosity about life beyond his hometown. In the fall of that year, he ventured westward, engaging in various nonprofit organizations. Facing financial challenges, he found himself staying at the International Travelers House hostel in San Diego, an experience that profoundly impacted him. Immersed in a vibrant community, he embraced the exchange of work for accommodation and meals. His dedication led to a managerial position, and within nine months, the hostel gained acclaim, ranking first on platforms like Hostelworld, Yelp, and TripAdvisor.

In 2015, after leaving the hospitality industry and traveling globally, David worked as a program manager at a climbing gym, further deepening his passion for hospitality and customer relations. The idea of owning and operating a hostel took root during this time, especially after a conversation with a partner met at the San Diego inn. In 2016, David left the climbing gym, searched for a suitable property, and was drawn to Rumney, New Hampshire, with guidance from his friend Dom Pascariollo. Together, they identified a property and, with support from Dom's parents, embarked on transforming a barn—once a chicken coop and later a mechanical workshop—into a welcoming hostel. The renovation, completed in 2018, preserved the barn's historical essence while introducing modern amenities. Barn Door Hostel now offers a variety of accommodations, including dormitories and private rooms, catering primarily to rock climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. Situated on nine acres, the hostel provides tent camping, car camping, and hammock sites, with a brook on the property for swimming and bathing. Its proximity to the White Mountain National Forest and numerous climbing routes solidifies its status as a premier destination for adventurers.

David's commitment extends beyond hospitality; he actively engages with the community, organizing events like the annual Outdoor Fest. This festival features activities such as group hikes, guided paddling, vendor exhibitions, professional clinics, and live music, fostering a sense of community among visitors and locals alike.

His journey from a curious traveler to the founder of Barn Door Hostel exemplifies his dedication to creating inclusive spaces that celebrate adventure, community, and the spirit of exploration.
